Dry Needling

Dry Needling in Melbourne

What is it?

Dry needling is a process that involves inserting acupuncture needles into soft tissue around the body, including muscles, fascia, ligaments, and tendons. Also known as myofascial dry needling or biomedical acupuncture, dry needling can be effective in releasing chronically tight muscles and those in spasm. This treatment is not to be confused with acupuncture; dry needling is based on western anatomy and medicine, where acupuncture is based on Chinese medicine. Dry needling is used solely to treat musculoskeletal conditions.

How does it work?

The technique of dry needling works by targeting trigger points within the muscle, much in the same way as massage. An acupressure needle, however, is much finer than a thumb or finger and as such, can be more precise and have a more powerful impact. The needle is inserted into the muscle-stimulating-nerve-receptors which disrupts the pattern of pain and ultimately helps the muscle to relax.

What can it treat?

Dry needling – when provided by qualified practitioners – is a safe and effective treatment of chronic and acute pain.
